I hope that you are well. I’ve had the opportunity to go through some prints and post them here. Come back and visit this site every so often, because I’ll be adding more pictures as time goes on.

Put your favorite music on, pour yourself your favorite beverage, and enjoy. You deserve it.

These are all hand-made prints in a black and white darkroom, using fiber paper and stored in archival boxes. I use only acid-free 4-ply museum board to mat the prints. In absence of commercial and event photography work, I’ve decided to make these images available for purchase. Maybe you’re looking to collect more original art. Maybe you see a picture that will fit perfectly in that certain place in your home. I’m happy to talk about my process, show details of the print, and discuss framing options.

I took this image while wandering around New York City. I used my Hasselblad and a yellow filter to be able to capture the subtle qualities of the clouds while properly exposing the buildings. Everyone loves the Chrysler Building, and there it is peeking out in the background. I barely noticed the Chrysler building when I took the picture. I was amazed at the texture, patterns, and shine of the metal Saucony Mobil Building (150 East 42nd Street) built in 1954-55. This was printed in a dark room with archival fiber paper. I am always amazed at how 3 dimensional this print looks in person.

This image was taken during a 3-week vacation in Big Sur, California. Normally, I would wake up before everyone, before the sun rose, to take pictures at dawn. This one was taken in the middle of the day. I used a Polaroid magazine on my Hasselblad and Type 665 Film which is now discontinued. This film allowed me to peel and separate a small print from a negative. When I pulled apart the film, it was exposed to the sun and instantly transformed. The negative became solarized, and the result when using it for enlargements in the darkroom was a vintage, surreal collage-like image. I especially love the solarizing effect on the foreground. I like the messiness of this image because it lends itself well to the magnificent chaos that ensued each time a wave came crashing through, between the two mighty rocks on either side. I was entertained for a long time, just watching these waves on the rocks.

When my first son was small, we lived in an apartment building in Southfield, Michigan. It was part of the urban sprawl of Greater Detroit. Needless to say, I wasn’t very happy there, coming from walkable cities like Paris, Berlin, San Francisco, and Boston. As a photographer, cities provide endless image-making and there’s nothing more fun than wandering with the camera. In Southfield, I did however find Farmbrook Road, a little dirt road just a couple of blocks away from our building. We took our iives into our own hands getting there via Franklin Road. Cars weren’t used to seeing pedestrians and there was no sidewalk. Once, someone pulled over to make sure I was okay and my car didn’t break down. Once on Farmbrook Road, we forgot that we lived next to a cell-tower and an intersecting asphalt mess of 60’s-era highway hell. It was so loud on that street. Not from the cars that surrounded it, but by the symphony of tree frogs, crickets, cicadas, and birds. It was that time of evening when hundreds of birds perched on a tree together talking, then for a moment they all become silent, fly away in unison and then, as if one body, fly this way under the twilight sky. Knowing this would happen, I prepared my camera. The Hasselblad is a slow camera. After taking a picture, I had to manually wind it to the next frame. Still, I had taken several pictures of the birds and managed to take a whole roll of this scene. I only ended up printing this one, and have three copies. I would like to one day revisit this roll and print more from this series.

This image was taken with a 4x5 camera in studio. I have always loved the work of Irving Penn, and when I saw this can on the beach. It had a history and a personality. I knew I had to take a picture of it. I am drawn to the multi-dimensional quality of this. There’s a sharpness and tonal range to a picture from a large-format camera printed by hand on fiber paper that just cannot be found in the digital world. I have two of these. And I think I am going to have to keep one as my access to darkrooms wane.

I was driving in a borrowed car home from the airport (SFO) and stopped off at Half Moon Bay. It makes no sense that I would make such a detour; it was two towns and 20 miles in the opposite direction, but I did. While the description of the beaches there say that it’s famous for its surf, I happened to be there on a quiet misty day. This milky wave approached me and I got that feeling, that I knew among the countless waves and pictures of waves, that this one was special.

This picture was taken at night using Kodak color film. I love night photography for many reasons, but primarily for the surreal colors that a long exposure reveals. This one has been hanging on my wall for a while and it always makes me happy when I look at it. I love Paris at night and the composition of these rooftops. It’s currently framed in a totally unorthodox way that I love. The gray mat board is from the Smith College ART100 class. When students studied for an exam in ART100, they would go to the art building and study from a large wall with images and information posted for their review. I found a collection of these in the Art Building recently. They were in a free pile. I’d never taken ART100 while at Smith, but I knew people who did, and remembered the wall of images and the cards.

No TV in our room. That was a big deal at the time. In the late 90s, internet was not a thing yet. We felt so rustic. This was one of the pictures that I took when I moved to San Francsisco and took a 3-week trip to Big Sur with my friends Shannon and Priscilla. I’d never even heard of Big Sur. Every morning, I would wake up before they did, took my pictures, and then met them at the same place every day for breakfast. This may have been the day where I saw a bobcat on the beach, and then a Ranger. The ranger said he’d given the Bobcat a fish head for breakfast, as a pact. I woke up slightly too late for the soft light. The magic of the first light was gone, but the power of these rocks and beach remained. Priscilla was used to nature. She was from Maine and lived on a self-sustaining commune of sorts. She always ordered nothing but one egg for breakfast because she was on a budget and she knew how to live frugally. We were all on a budget, but I still had toast with my egg.

This picture was taken on the same morning as the previous picture only about 30 minutes earlier. My friend Shannon instinctively knew that it was just before dawn. Three of us were staying in a little cottage at Big Sur, I believe it was Glen Oaks. This is when I saw a woman telling me that “the Chiefs used to walk on this beach.” This is the time of day that I prefer for pictures. The time between first light and dawn is fleeting and hard to freeze. This is one of my favorite pictures.

This roll of toilet paper was sitting on my dining room table in my studio space in South Boston. I actually didn’t have a dining room in my space. I didn’t even have a sink. Or a bathroom. It was 1,000 square feet of industrial space. I dated someone for a very short time, an MD/PhD candidate at Harvard/MIT. He walked in and said, “Wow! This is like Rent!” I hadn’t heard of the musical. The space was in a building of artists on Summer Street. I probably breathed a lot of asbestos removing the vinyl flooring in that space, but didn’t know better at the time. It was a lovely space. Down the hall was a shared bathroom, a shared sink in the hallway, and a darkroom. The rent was $500 per month. You heard that right. This was taken the first year I started taking pictures. This is a rare picture since I used artificial light. What inspired me to take the picture was the overhead light and texture of the table and paper. My teacher Todd also loved paper goods, and inspired me to remember to look at paper goods. He actually inspired me to look at everything, but in this case, paper goods. Little did I know that 25 years later we’d be holding toilet paper to such high regard.

This picture was taken after my sister spent 3 months in the hospital in Munich. She made it and we were able to go for a walk in the woods. This is a tradition for people in Germany, to begin the new year taking a walk in nature. "I took this picture after taking a close-up picture of the roots of a tree. I remember her saying something like, “You’re taking a picture of the ground? The dirt?” The woods were very special to me at the time since I’d been living in the busy district of Schwabing. Before that I’d pretty much always lived in busy cities. I am now living the quarantine life taking walks in nature every day. So looking at this image, it doesn’t feel as special. But I remember the thrill I got taking the picture of the dirt and the misty woods beyond it. I just click-baited on an article about two girls who captured and assasinated Nazi’s in the woods. They had a stock picture of the German woods and it looked eerily like this picture.

Human Landscape

This picture is an abstraction in the sunshine of a human back and arms. Many people love it because it takes a minute to register what it is. Todd and I spent a lot of time on beaches for work and sometimes we’d have a chance to swim in the ocean. This was one of those quick moments where I was photographing the landscape, when I noticed the light on his back. Don’t move, and it became one of my favorite pictures.

I know what you’re thinking. Yes, this is the most stunning image ever made of the Anza-Borrego Desert. This was the first and last time I ever camped, too. This was taken with the Hasselblad, with an extension tube 21 to get close up on this…. beetle? Not sure what it is, but what I do know is It’s a solarized Polaroid negative made with 665 film, printed on fiber paper. I have a black and white print of this as well as a yellow toned (not sure if it’s Sepia or Selenium toned, or if there’s a yellow tone.) The result is textured and scratchy wonderfulness.

Any San Francisco lovers out there? When I think of a hand-colored photograph, I think of a little girl holding a basket of flowers. Her cheeks are unnaturally rosey. Her eyes unreasonably blue. It’s usually in a 1970s frame. Not since the turn of the century have I appreciated hand coloring, but a black and white image of the Pastel City didn’t make any sense. San Francisco isn’t black and white to me. I took photographs of someone in her apartment, and as it got dark, I took some pictures of the view out her window. I made only one of these.

Sometimes, when I take a picture, I get the same feeling I got when I hit a three run RBI single in the bottom of the 9th. This is the feeling I got when taking this picture. It doesn’t happen often. I woke up super early in the morning, maybe 4:30am, and packed my backpack and tripod (though I believe that it was hard to actually use the tripod on the bridge due to the swaying of the bridge and vibrations of the cables.) and headed from my garage (yes I lived in a garage but there was an adjacent darkroom) South of Market. I shared a building with Diamond Dave. Look him up. Anyway, I rode my bike just to get that misty magical morning feeling on the bridge. It was cold and windy. An amazing feeling. On the way back, the magic was all but gone, except inside my camera, and I would stop at a fancy coffee shop and get a pastry.

This was from a short trip to Napa. It wasn’t a wine tour. In fact, I’m not sure why we were there or who the we was. But I do remember seeing beautiful landscapes that reminded me of France. The next three pictures are from the same day. I used the technique of taking a Polaroid magazine for my Hasselblad, then peeling apart the negative in sunlight so that the negative became solarized. This image was not solarized but as you can see by the pictures that follow, some of this effect is particulary pronounced. It almost looks like a negative on the bottom half of the picture, and a positive on top.

This image of the figure was taken in Seattle, and the tree was taken in Boston. It wasn’t until I moved to the East from Michigan that I began to see the beautiful patterned bark of Plane trees. I’m sure they were everywhere in Paris but I didn’t notice them. I was most intrigued by the Elm trees since we don’t have too many here. This picture was created by putting two negatives together. This was the poster/post card for a group show in Boston called “The Naked and the Nude.”

I lived in Paris and my first child was born there. We lived on the 5th story of a walk-up building. Even if there was an elevator, I probably wouldn’t have used it. (Have you been in one of those elevators in Paris apartment buildings?) Paris is an absolute dream for everything that I love. When my partner told me that it was time for him to pursue a post-doctoral opportunity at UC Berkeley, I literally cried. I think I even refused to leave. Eventually, we did leave. But not without a struggle. Here is a picture that I took from a window during a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts.
