the wedding: frequently asked questions
How long have you been doing this?
Over 12 years.
Where did you go to school?
Smith College and the New England School of Photography. I also studied at the Sorbonne and private art studios in Paris, during my junior year abroad.
When I hire your studio, how will I know which photographer will show up at my wedding?
I run a boutique business. Aside from interns, assistants, and technicians, I am my studio. I will be your photographer, and will give you my personal attention.
Why do you photograph weddings?
First, it comes naturally to me. The Wedding is a spectacular ritual; I connect to it emotionally and artistically. It's meaningful.
I delight in finding beauty of all kinds on the wedding day: the silhouette of the bride preparing; laughter during the toast; tears during the ceremony; the sunset; the sleeping child; the dancing grandparents. It's a great joy and a privilege to be able to hand over hundreds of photographs to the bride and groom, of the wedding as I saw it.
What is your style?
I have a fine arts background, so, artistic. I have a vintage medium format camera, so, traditional. I have a quick digital camera, so, candid. I've also been known to bring along a toy camera and infrared film for special effects.
I find beautiful light whenever I can, and create it when I can't. I photograph emotion. I love a good portrait and consider any wedding album a success if it contains plenty of wonderful candids.
I'm quick and unobtrusive; I approach the subject, take the photograph, and then move on. I don't linger around. Unless you request formals, I don't direct you. I encourage you go about things as you naturally would, as I document it.
Do you have any examples of photographs from one single wedding?
Do you travel?
I serve all of New York City, Jersey City and Hoboken. I will travel to Upstate New York, Long Island, Connecticut, Northern New Jersey and The Jersey Shore.
Film or digital?
Both. I use primarily film, and my second photographer shoots digital.
What do I get, and how much does it cost?
Some people want the bare minimum, and others want full service including three albums. I offer different packages that reflect a range of needs. See the wedding package section for details. If you don't see what you want, I'm happy to custom design our Terms of Agreement.
Do you offer video?
Yes, I work with several different videographers.
How long until I get my photographs back?
Not long after you return from your honeymoon. Three to five weeks, depending on the package and the size of your wedding.
Do you do site visits in advance of the wedding day?
Not usually. I'm trained in sizing up locations on the spot, and visiting the space in advance doesn't help me take better photographs. The location is about the place, but it's also about the quality of light and decoration, things that can only be revealed on the wedding day itself.
Do you bring an assistant?
The assistant is my second photographer.
Do you work with a second photographer?
Yes.
Do you only photograph weddings?
I also photograph actors' headshots, musicians and other artists, family, maternity, children, events (bar/bat mitzvahs, theatre, arts events, music festivals, sweet sixteen parties, school dances, holiday parties), annual reports, corporate advertisements, brochures, and a bit of fashion. See my commercial website for examples.
I'm also a fine art painter and photographer, and exhibit my paintings, landscapes, cityscapes, street photographs, portraits and collages at least biannually.
